Paul Ince was a dazzling central midfield player for United in the 90s. Unlike most recent good United players, he left whilst at his peak and went to Inter Milan, one of few Englishmen who have enjoyed success in the Italian league.

After that, he went to Liverpool - therefore Ince is mostly hated by United fans, especially as he never resists a dig at the club.

Fergie once called him a “big-time Charlie” as well!

Denis Irwin was an Irish player who provided solid defence as a full back for United in the 90s.

Although he didn’t provide much in the way of crosses and overlapping runs, he is probably the most solid left (and sometimes right) back that I have seen at United.

Noone since has been as solid and reliable as him.

He was also pretty good at free kicks and penalities - someone once told me that he had a special penalty in Pro Evolution!

Ron Atkinson a.k.a. Big Ron has been quite a journeyman in the managerial stakes.

Many people, especially those in their early 20s are younger forget that he actually once managed United!

Manchester United under Ron Atkinson was a bit of a joke though, with players regularly going on drinking binges and general lack of discipline.

Having said that, Ron was the one who signed Bryan Robson and did bring some trophyware to Old Trafford.

Gary Neville was part of a crop of perhaps the most successful youngsters to ever hit the top flight of English football and perhaps the world.

He is a die hard red, hence the chant “Gary Neville is a Red, he hates Scousers”.

He even once ran half the pitch to goad the Liverpool fans after United scored a goal!

He has always been a solid right-back, indeed he is pretty good when filling in at centre back as well, despite his lack of height.

Halfway through his career, he developed a good ability to link up with his right winger and is capable of putting in some decent crosses.

Owen Hargreaves is another recent signing to Manchester United.

He famously burst onto the scene playing for Bayern Munich as a youngster. A few, myself included, saw his amazing talent straight away including his confidence on the ball, fearlessness and guile - the latter quality in particular being lacking amongst many English players.

Of late, he has burst into the England team to establish himself amongst a competitive top flight of midfielders.

Since losing Roy Keane, Ferguson has long been looking for a replacement defensive midfielder. Although United have long had a combination of one attacking and one defensive midfielder - modern often requires a more agile and adept pairing of two defensive midfielders.

Now we have Hargreaves to add to the existing Carrick, we finally have that deadly combination!
